McCoy expertly relates his innermost thoughts and feelings, drawing on his mastery of personal leadership. Colonel McCoy understands the intangibles that make up our modern-day warriors, those young Americans on whom we place so much responsibility when we send them into harm's way.
The author begins with the institutional design that leads some to believe that because of a manifestation of the American culture in which we're taught to kill from a young age through the use of video games, the task of a warrior would somehow be easily executed, based solely on these inequities. To the contrary, Colonel McCoy points out that the battlefield commander is hampered by the societal digression and the simple fact that young Americans can point a video weapon and kill, never feeling the true effects or suffering associated with actual combat. He explains that our culture is not that of predator, but more of prey. Through examples, he concludes that the American society places grave consequence on the taking of a human life, while we still require our young to bear arms against our enemies and to extinguish life. Only through superb training, conducted by passionate leaders, do our young Americans become moral warriors.
Colonel McCoy describes the total cost of combat and the price paid by all who choose to become warriors. By pointing to positive training examples and keying on the effects of situational training—battle drills—conducted prior to and during combat, he successfully trained his Marines and developed the proper habits that would be the difference between life and death during combat. He directed his Marines to become "experts in the application of violence," without sacrificing their humanity. In the book, it became clear that he found the combination that allowed his men to achieve tactical superiority in every aspect.
The essence of war is violence and the act of killing legitimate human targets without hesitation. To accomplish this, he instituted meaningful training and used his refined principles as a human being to guide him in the leadership and administration on the moral code that rules the field of battle. He is the perfect example of all that we hold dear in our warrior culture. He loved his men, showed them the right way through his personal example, guided his actions with passion and relayed his feelings to his men completely. He is quick to note his own shortcomings and how he overcame them and was the inspiration to the team that triumphed when all Marines survived the day.
Emotionally riveting, The Passion of Command provides inside information into the warrior culture and allows one to grasp the complexities when hardening the mind, body, and spirit for the rigors of combat. Most find it difficult to communicate the human effects of combat to people who have never experienced the harsh realities associated with actually engaging an enemy. When I picked up this book, I thought that it would be another drawn out story about a list of things that one needs to do to take charge and be in command. I was so wrong. This book does more than just guide you through the mentality of leadership. It gives great examples and explains why you need to do certain things. It draws up a simple template that McCoy used for his Marines that can easily be adapted to any combat oriented force. McCoy hits hard on the need for mastering the basics, but he doesn't leave out the fact that you need to help the Marines through their personal problems as well. He talks about gaining respect on and off the training grounds. Honestly, I wish I would have read this book sooner because I now realize that there were a lot of things that I could have done better as an NCO in the Marine Corps. But on the same note, I am confident that I will be able to take the ideas of this book and apply them to any leadership role that I am given outside of the military. This is a must read for those who lead men under fire, and it is also a great read for those who want to learn more about leadership from a difference facet.Product details

Col. McCoy writes eloquently and realistically about the demands placed on leaders and commanders during war. The principles of combat leadership that he so directly addresses can be applied to any leadership position. Who better to learn leadership from than a man who's decisions determined the fate of other men.
I served in the Marine Corps and was stationed at Twentynine Palms while Col McCoy and his Marines were fighting in Iraq. I remember when they returned home. I personally know several of the Marines he references in this piece. They are all true warriors and leaders. They are what I strive to be as a leader.

This book really examines, albeit briefly, but still somehow in depth, the deeper darker side that combat leaders and commanders must bear during war. It also outlines the steps that commanders should take to more effectively establish their command presence. Being a SNCO in the Marines I can see what parts that I can take and apply in my own situation. The read is short, but rich, fairly easy to understand, and really makes you think about your own situation, I know I will eventually read this again,and actually look forward to it. If your are a combat leader or know that you will be in a position to lead in combat, stop debating and spend the $4.00 to buy this book, all proceeds go to benefit wounded veterans, so it is really a win win situation.
I gave this book five stars because it puts training your Marines in perspective. Not only does the author tell Marine officers to have passion but to train Marines to the brink until they can't get it wrong.
If it is not already required reading for candidates in U.S. Marine Corps Basic School, it should be. I would have been happy to have been assigned to Colonel McCoy's battalion. Perhaps not of much interest to someone who never served in the armed forces, but if Colonel McCoy follows the precepts in his book, he is the epitome of the Marine Officer. Officers in combat units in other branches of the armed services would do well to emulate Colonel McCoy's prescription for leadership.
This was a re-read from about 9 years ago. Something worth going over again. Col McCoy illustrates the foundational characteristics of combat leadership.
A very good and easy read. McCoy has refined the essentials of leadership and combat leadership in particular to its simplest. He has done a wonderful job of getting across his ideas, all the while demonstrating both his humanity and the practicality he wrestles with by having to take life, directly and indirectly. He book makes the point that leaders in other theaters fail to establish - that leadership is hard, intensely personal, demanding of personal development and the pursuit of perfection and that school and basic training aren't enough.
Perhaps most poignant is the end of the book, where even to the last line, we witness his struggle to make sense of, and live with, the things he has had to do as a leader. It is an extremely rare insight into the reality of leadership, and a reminder that no victory, in business, military, or any other theater comes without a price, often invisible, which must be paid by the leader and the leader alone.
Disappointingly few can optimize unit capabilities because few are equipped with the talents and judgment to synergize the strengths and weaknesses of subordinates. Promotions through the chain of command provide progressively greater responsibilities, and the basic requirements for effective officer and NCO leadership are met in OCS and NCO Leadership training, but loyalty between those who lead and those who follow has to be developed, and that takes a certain insight and maturity. Loyalty is earned and shared, and it's not a natural development of time and exposure. This officer has provided valuable insights through his career and combat experience. It deserves to be read by all who aspire to military leadership and, for those who can make the extension of logic to the corporate world, it is still a very worthwhile read. Management sets the priority, and it's easier to "talk the talk" than it is to "walk the walk". Leadership isn't a 9-to-5 job that one sets aside at the end of the workday. It must be embraced, lived, and alarmingly few rise above mediocrity. I recommend this book.
